Mariekson Julius “Didi” Gregorius was born on February 18th 1990 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Gregorius began playing tee-ball in the Netherlands before moving to Curaçao at the age of 5 where he was raised.
Gregorius, his father and his brother all go by the same nickname “Didi” and he began using the name in the United States when his teammates cloud not pronounce his birth name.
Gregorius was scouted at the u-18 tournament in The Hague 2006 by the Cincinnati Reds, and in 2007 he was signed by the Reds as an amateur free agent. He made his MLB debut with the Reds on September 5th 2012. In later 2012 Gregorius was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 3-team deal involving the Cleveland Indians. Gregorius was traded again in December 2014 to the New York Yankees in another 3-team deal.
The Yankees really believed in Gregorius potential and he was the one the Yankees chose to fill retired Yankee Derek Jeter’s position at shortstop. He’s been a solid and great player for the Yankees the last couple of seasons and he’s become a fan favorite in New York.
In 2013 and 2017 he was also part of The Kingdom of the Netherlands baseball team at the World Baseball Classic and he was also named as a Final Vote candidate for the 2017 MLB All-Star Game.
In 2017 Gregorius also broke the record for most home runs in a season by a Yankee shortstop(24) set by Derek Jeter, he finished the 2017 MLB Regular season with 25 home runs.
